Curvy Girl in a “Skinny Jean World”

Posted by on Sep 13, 2012 in Blog | 9 comments

So the weather is unfortunately getting colder, yes I know, I don’t like saying it anymore than you like hearing it but them’s is the breaks. To cheer you up I can say this, with the cooler weather comes some great fashion and the comfort of being able to throw on your jeans again! Yes, jeans may be the only thing I like about the return of cooler weather so with that said I have decided to take some of the mystery out of denim trends and focus on one style that has recently been the cut of choice for most retailers, the “skinny” jean.  While I appreciate what a great pair of skinnies can do for a woman’s shape I am also way too familiar with what can go wrong when opting for this particular cut. Speaking from experience as a full figured girl and one that carries the majority of “curve” through the hip and thigh, I am well aware that skinny jeans can be a curvy girl’s worst enemy. I mean come on it basically says right in the name “if you ain’t skinny, I’m not for you”. Well lucky for you I don’t believe that has to be the case so let’s start by breaking down what to look for and avoid when hitting the stores for your next pair of jeans. There are quite a few options out there  so I have broken it down into 3 main styles that you will see fairly regularly.

Let’s go over the difference between the shapes that fall under the “skinny” category and be advised I plan on petitioning to try to get that name changed.

“The Jegging” is exactly what it sounds like- a mash up of jean and legging, so basically after a long day you are going to have to peel those suckers off like you were removing a pair of spanx, sound fun right? I know, not so much. My main issue with the jegging is that in most cases the fabric is quite flimsy and that does nothing to help hold a woman in or provide a smoother appearance, in other words all your lumps and bumps will be on display so please if you are really curvy it’s best to wear these jeggings as an accessory to a tunic or with a longer chucky sweater.

Next up is “the skinny”. This is where it gets tough as the skinny jean can fit very differently depending on the brand so you are going to have to search to find the best style for your shape but here are a few things to consider. Firstly, the skinny will usually have a more narrow fit through the hip/thigh and thorough the knee as well as an average ankle opening of roughly 11.5-12.5”.  The smaller ankle opening make these jeans ideal for tucking into your favorite fall boots or pairing them with a high heel for a dressier option. You want to look for a cut that has a decent amount of lycra or spandex (1%-2%) for comfort not to mention that will help it to retain it’s shape a little better over time. Another thing to consider when you are curvy is the rise, a lot of designer denim is still being made with a very low rise, which can lead to a bevy of fashion faux pa’s. Please remember that plumbers crack and muffin top are never in fashion so try to seek out a style that gives you a little more coverage in the back but isn’t so high that you enter into “mom jean” territory. High waisted jeans are very hard for a curvy girl to pull off although that’s a discussion for another day.  Moving on to the next style the “straight” or the “skinny straight ”. This is by far one of the easiest style’s for my curvy ladies. Keep in mind it tends to look a little more casual as it give a little more room through the hip and the thigh as well as more room through the knee and an ankle opening of roughly 14” This is a perfect jean to wear with flats, loafers or sandals.  This style works wonders if you are very full through the hip and maybe on the shorter side as it balances your larger hips but still elongates the leg more than a flare or bootcut style would. This is a perfect style to pair with a cute menswear inspired sweater or jacket.  Ok so that covers the main elements of each style.

Now comes the tougher part, finding the best place to shop for your denim and getting the most for your money. Listen, I don’t mind spending money on good quality denim but honestly I have become so impressed with the selection out there lately that I feel it’s no longer necessary to drop $150-$225 on one pair of jeans. Let’s be honest for a minute the majority of my life is spent chasing and cleaning up after the tornado of destruction I lovingly call my toddler, I have to be realistic about how often my designer jeans are really going to come out to play. I also pride myself on being able to source out fun, trendy, attainable fashion for the real woman so with that being said here are my choices for the best denim for your shape and your wallet, the links to these awesome deals are at the bottom of this post so check them out and happy shopping!!!

Best Mid price Skinny Jeans

BDG Denim “Mid rise Cigarette”

This jean rocks, Urban Outfitters carries a ton of selection of BDG denim in styles from the super skinny to a boot cut and everything in between. Not to mention the most current colours and patterns at an amazing price. Most styles start around $57. The weight of the denim, amount of stretch etc varies quite a bit between styles so definitely try on a few styles to find the best fit for your shape. I love the Mid rise cigarette and the skinny. Enough coverage in the back and and the length is very generous for my taller girls. This is the best place to try a colour or pattern outside of your comfort zone without having to invest in “a trend”. This season they are featuring shades from burgundy to jade and the subtle animal prints and tone on tone patterns that are easier and less distracting for a fuller hip and thigh. Keep in mind the largest size they carry right now is a 32, although I am holding out hope that they will expand their line in the future.

Second Denim- “Yoga midrise skinny”

There are so many things I love about these jeans I don’t know where to start. Firstly the name actually describes what these jeans can do. They are so comfortable you can do just about any activity in them. They are produced with a denim that has shape retention unlike any other. The company produces all of their product right here in Canada and they are environmentally conscious to boot! Here is my absolute favorite part though, after all that awesomeness they charge a very reasonable price of $120 a pair. That is really impressive considering all that these jeans have going on. The sizing is also very generous and they go up to a size 34. Do yourself a favour and check them out, I think I may have just changed your life, no big.

Best Straighter Skinny

American Eagle Outfitters “The skinny” or “The straight”

I love these jeans because they are easy to find, the colours of denim are fun and on trend and they are right on point in the price department. They go on sale frequently but are never more than $40 a pair. They also have amazing extended sizing online with most jeans available up to a size 18 AND they make an extra long length! Yup, pretty amazing! I included the skinny as their version actually has a more roomy leg opening of 12.75” a little wider than most skinnies on the market. The straight offers a 15.5 leg opening and a higher rise as well.

Best Plus size Skinny Jean

Old Navy “The Flirt”

This jean comes in a variety of washes, sits just below the waist and has a fuller thigh with lots of stretch. Offered in sizes up to a 20 as well as long lengths, this is a great everyday basic for an amazing price.  Most Old Navy denim is $39.50 and with great online shopping sales and incentives you can always get an even better deal!
